Program Encourages Shade Tree Use to Help Manage Energy and Save Money
Mohave Electric Cooperative, together with the City of Bullhead City, is once again sponsoring Operation Cool Shade. Operation Cool Shade encourages the use of shade trees to help manage energy and save energy dollars by reducing air conditioning usage.
Four different types of desert-adapted shade trees are available to Cooperative members for the low price of $9 per tree. As a bonus, Mohave Electric will include a free energy-saving LED bulb with each tree purchased.
About 1,800 trees will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis. The varieties offered, Willow Acacia, Shoestring Acacia, Chaste and Rosewood, are all recommended as being well-suited for our climate by the Master Gardeners of Bullhead City in association with University of Arizona College of Agriculture, and the horticulture professionals of Mountain States Wholesale Nursery. When planted on the sunny side of a home, trees shade the walls, roof, and windows, and help save energy dollars by reducing some of the need for air conditioning. Trees can also help reduce the need to add power generation resources because the energy you save doesn’t need to be produced.
Operation Cool Shade tree sales begin Wednesday, September 13, at Mohave Electric’s Member Service Office, 928 Hancock Road, Bullhead City. Business hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Members receive LED bulb(s) at time of tree purchase.
Tree distribution will take place on Saturday, November 18, at the Bullhead City Public Works parking lot located across the street from Bullhead City Administration Complex, 1255 Marina Blvd.
The University of Arizona Mohave County Cooperative Extension Bullhead City Master Gardeners will hold a class on how to plant and care for your desert landscape trees on Thursday, October 19, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mohave County Library, 1170 Hancock Road in Bullhead City.
